2020-12-14

Nichia and OSRAM emphasized the importance of intellectual property (IP) in its business sector and announced that it will expand its licensing cooperation.

Nichia Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. and OSRAM GmbH have already concluded patent exchange authorization agreements in 2002 and 2010. Both parties can apply the patents for their respective nitride semiconductor products such as blue, green, and white LEDs and laser components. Kiyohiko Ogawa, Chairman of Nichia Industry Co., Ltd., and Aldo Kamper, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH, met in the Light + Building exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, to expand and strengthen the cooperation between the two parties and express their mutual intentions.

Ogawa Hiroki and Aldo Kamper believe that since the two parties signed the latest licensing agreement in 2010, the industry has been very developed. Aldo Kamper said: “In order to further develop LED and laser technologies, Nichia and OSRAM have invested more than EUR 2.5 billion in research and development since 2011.” The two companies agreed to open about 7,000 new global patent applications today. Interactive authorization negotiations, including approximately 2,000 global patent rights from Nichia and OSRAM, span the fields of automotive, general lighting, LCD backlighting, displays, pharmaceutical and industrial applications, and optoelectronic products in all areas.

Ogawa Yukie said: “From semiconductor epitaxy to phosphor materials and packaging to further downstream technologies, both sides have made significant progress and achieved extensive new developments in the value chain over the past eight years. Patent rights protection.” In order to obtain the technical achievements of both parties in all existing and emerging optoelectronic product and technology application fields, Nichia and OSRAM will discuss the interactive authorization to cover the patented technologies developed by both parties since 2010. Aldo Kamper added: "I totally agree with this view. In this way, both of us will be able to fully leverage each other's technological achievements so that consumers on both sides will receive industry-leading IP protection and benefit from it."
