Mini LED and Micro LED Technology

2020-12-14

What kind of display technology is Mini LED and Micro LED? What is the difference between the current mainstream OLED display and what is the status in the current industry?

The reporter learned from interviews with a number of industry sources that OLED has dominated the market in television and mobile phones. However, it is known that OLED currently has limited capacity and is basically monopolized by South Korea. Companies originally in the LED display market were hit, but many LED companies did not choose to follow OLED technology.

In addition to OLED screen technology, Micro LED is generally considered as the next-generation display technology, which has excellent display performance, low power and high brightness, and there is no "burn-in" phenomenon that may occur with OLED technology. , is a very good choice.

Regarding this technology, Apple acquired LuxVue in 2014 and cooperated with the supply chain to study the production of micro LED-based devices. The layout surrounding Micro LEDs also includes Hon Hai, Sony and others. However, micro-LEDs also have difficulties in mass production, and MiniLED technology is regarded as an ideal transitional product because it has the advantages of Micro-LEDs and is easy to mass-produce.

Taiwan, China, is the main market for Mini LED and Micro LED. Due to the outbreak of high-end OLED panel market and South Korea's near-monopoly in high-end OLED panel technology, LED-related companies in Taiwan have been greatly impacted. While micro LEDs considered as next-generation display technologies have not yet progressed, Taiwanese companies urgently need new growth points, and Mini LED has become an ideal product at present.

Infineon’s executive vice president Ding Jinglong once said in an interview: “Taiwan has not kept pace with the investment in AMOLED panels. Now it is too late. However, if successful development of Mini LED and Micro LED, there will be opportunities to send AMOLED panels in the future. Into the refrigerator."

According to reports, compared with traditional LCD display technology, Mini LED's high dynamic range imaging has higher precision, lower power consumption, and more detailed images than traditional LCD display technology, and can achieve "full screen" effect. As a new display technology, Mini LED can be applied to large-size display screens, TVs, and mobile phone backlights.

In addition, Mini LED has lower costs. Ruifeng Optoelectronics said in an announcement that, with 6-inch mobile phone panels as an example, the current cost of LCD panels for ordinary LED backlighting is approximately US$20-30, while the cost of flexible OLEDs is approximately US$80-100. The cost of LCD panels with Mini LED backlight design About 40-50 dollars.
