IoT lighting specification introduced

2020-12-14

The long-awaited first standard for networked lighting has been announced.

The standard is called "Specification V1" and was launched by the industry organization IoT-Ready Alliance to promote the development of the Internet of Things lighting.

It defines the interface, allowing any type of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor or control module to be seamlessly connected to a fixture or other building system. This standard is independent of the network protocol.

Joe Costello, CEO of Connected Lighting Expert Enlighted, stated: "The interface specification is a very important first step in the implementation of the IoT-Ready Alliance, making it easy to install IoT technology in luminaires now and in the future.

The standard specifies all elements of the interface, including mechanical, electrical, and software elements, and allows components to be modified and replaced in the field without disassembly.

The specification is based on royalty-free licensing and can work with any network protocol including Thread, BLE, ZigBee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, and IP/Ethernet.

It is backwards compatible with traditional lighting controls and can be implemented using traditional lighting controls until IoT is required.

“We announced the introduction of the fifth-generation sensor, which will comply with the IoT-Ready interface specification. We are also committed to ensuring that all future sensors are compliant with the IoT-Ready standard. We look forward to working with member companies to develop new technologies and accelerate the adoption of LED lighting. Realize smarter buildings."

According to Karl Jónsson of Tridonic, "The IoT-Ready Alliance organization has come a long way. In a short span of a year, we not only developed the IoT-Ready interface specification, but also the specifications of Tridonic. First IoT-Ready LED Driver
